Skyactiv technology improves fuel economy. introductionthe 2012 mazda 3 takes a leadership role in automotive engineering with what mazda is calling skyactiv technology, 'an engineering philosophy that starts with a blank slate and open mind.'  the big change for 2012 is the introduction of a new 2. 0-liter engine that gets mazda's skyactiv treatment, delivering a terrific 28 miles per gallon in the city, 40 mpg on the highway. In fact, during one good run with that engine, we got 43. 7 mpg. The skyactiv engine runs on regular gasoline.  the 2012 mazda3 lineup features two new skyactiv transmissions to go with the skyactiv engine: a 6-speed automatic and 6-speed manual. That big grin that's been fixed on the face of the mazda3 for the past two years has been wiped off, replaced by a smile that's more reserved.  because the mazda3 was redesigned for 2010, including a lighter stiffer chassis and new interior, there aren't a lot of other changes for 2012.  for 2012, the old 2. 0-liter engine remains in the base model. Not by hard tires, space-saving spares, or aerodynamic hubcaps. And 'their 40' refers to hyundai elantra, ford focus, chevrolet cruze, and honda civic, competitors that also reach 40 mpg, in certain models. It's smoother, prettier and more aerodynamic, as the front fenders are also tweaked, puffed out forward of the wheels. The sedan has a 0. 27 coefficient of drag, and the five-door is 0. 29 cd, strong numbers for a hatchback.  there's one change from the interior of the 2011 mazda3, satin rings around the three climate knobs, for a reason mazda actually tested with human beings. Recognition speed and accuracy, and that means less distraction. Every single control on the mazda3 instrument panel is intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges clear, and digital information accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. Mazda3 comes standard with steering-wheel controls.  the mazda3 sedan's trunk has 11. 8 cubic feet of space, and the hatchback has 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat. Both come standard with 60/40 split folding rear seats, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously. In a pinch, the sedan can carry most of what the hatchback can.  in a day of hard driving on the angeles crest highway and on some mountain roads in southern california, we couldn't find a flaw in the 2. 0-liter skyactiv powertrain. We tested it hard, and it worked.  the 2012 mazda3's 2. 0-liter skyactiv engine makes 155 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque; good hp, excellent torque increase for the 2012 models. At 70 mph the engine spins at a leisurely 2200 rpm, smooth and silent. With the 6-speed manual, it runs 70 mph at 500 rpm more, still can't really hear it.  government fuel economy estimates for the new 2. 0-liter skyactiv engine were not available when this was written. Mazda officials place it at 28/40 miles per gallon. We got 29. 5 mpg driving it hard over the curvy 4910-foot-high angeles crest highway east of los angeles, and 43. 7 mpg returning to the city mostly on the freeway, running 65-70, accelerating and decelerating with the fast flow of traffic.  the 2012 6-speed automatic will downshift aggressively, and upshift at low rpm; few do that. The skyactiv goal was to make it upshift as fast as a twin-clutch automatic manual, and 15 milliseconds is the result.  the 2012 6-speed manual transmission also went skyactiv. This goal was to make it feel like the miata mx-5 gearbox. Bushings were changed to bearings, shafts re-splined, and oil reservoirs shrunk and moved, all to shorten the throw of the shift lever, from 50mm to 45mm, without making it feel heavier. Shortest throw of any passenger car, claims mazda.  the suspension on all 2012 mazda3 models has been tweaked to deliver a more european feel. We ran a lot of harsh patchy pavement on curvy roads, and it wasn't quite a sport sedan, but the feedback was direct, driven hard with the 6-speed automatic transmission in manual mode. The harsh patches never made the ride uncomfortable.  as for the 2. 5-liter engine, with 167 horsepower and 168 pounds of torque, it gets the job done with room to spare. The best happens when the tachometer swings through the 4500-4800 rpm range and keeps pulling to near redline. It climbs hills confidently and cruises on the highway effortlessly. For 2012, the bose 10-speaker surround sound system has been added as standard equipment.  options include rain-sensing wipers and bi-xenon headlamps, offered in only one other car in the compact segment; also dual zone air conditioning and 8-way power driver's seat, offered only by a few others.  safety equipment on all mazda3 models includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, tire-pressure monitor, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. Optional safety equipment, in the technology package, includes a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive headlamps and led taillamps. walkaroundthe 2012 mazda3 has been changed in the nose and a little bit in the rear bumper, and there are great new wheels. Mazda has wiped the smile off the face of the mazda3, or at least subdued it. It's like when meg ryan took the silicone out of her lips, she looked a lot better. If skyactiv were ruthless in its rule, they would be erased so the nose is more aero, but, hey, that's a bit too prius. The sedan's coefficient of drag is now 0. 27 cd, with the 5-door at 0. 29 cd, great numbers for a hatchback that isn't also a fastback (like the audi a7). The rear bumper on 2012 mazda3 i models is cleaner and body-colored now. New 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels for 2012 are sporty and handsome. Thanks in part to those wheels, the cliche that it looks like it's moving when it's standing still is true. interiormazda is the manufacturer we long for, when we complain about user-unfriendliness in the cabins of other cars, not to mention the distraction quotient. There are few changes from the interior of the 2011 mazda3, but the changes for 2012 have a reason.  the mission: eliminate distraction, so that the driver can concentrate on driving. Mazda means it, too many others mouth it without studying it. With mazda being neck-deep in racing, they know how to take up less of the driver's attention with necessary gauges and controls. Few if any other manufacturers act with such careful logic. Not ford, with the new focus and its optional and problematic myfordtouch. Ive kept a logbook of everything Ive done to the car or anytime its been serviced at all. Its got 123000 miles on it now, but it runs like a champ and still looks fantastic. There is some oxidation of the paint near the headlights as depicted in the picture. Launched as a 2010 model, the current-generation mazda3 got a refresh for 2012, including mazda's skyactiv technology.  the mazda3 looks smooth, pretty and aerodynamic. The sedan boasts a smooth 0. 27 coefficient of drag, while the five-door gets a 0. 29 cd, slippery for a hatchback. This reduces wind noise and improves fuel economy. Skyactiv is the most fuel-efficient of the lineup, with an epa-estimated 27/39 mpg with the standard 6-speed manual, and an impressive 28/40 mpg city/highway with the optional 6-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is the only available transmission. It's fun to drive, but fuel economy suffers with a mediocre 18/25 mpg city/highway.  the mazda3 models have nice interiors with terrific seats. Controls are intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges clear, and digital information accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. Both come with 60/40 split folding rear seats, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously. Others have gray, and the mazdaspeed3 is red.  we drove a mazda3 with terrific leather seats, and one with cloth seats, same padding and bolstering but firmer, maybe because cloth skin gets stretched more, and leather has inherent cushioning.  the sedan's trunk has 11. 8 cubic feet of space, and the hatchback has 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat. The rear seats are split 60/40, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously.  the 6-speed automatic transmission can be switched to manual mode and shifted with the gated lever. The shift action is another place where mazda logic rules: the lever goes back to upshift, forward to downshift, as in many race cars, because those directions flow with the g-forces on the body during acceleration and deceleration. It's a feel thing, not a think thing. driving impressionthe 2. 0-liter skyactiv powertrain performs ideally. We tested it hard, and it works. The engine makes 155 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque, enough for plenty of acceleration.

It's a swift and stylish alternative to a mid-size suv or a minivan.  the 2010 mazda cx-9 gets some significant updates, including minor styling revisions: exterior updates include the corporate five-pointed grille, side mirrors redesigned to be larger and more aerodynamic, taillights that feature a texture inspired by the nagare concept car, an additional chrome trim piece above the license plate that echoes the chrome trim floating in the front grille, and two new wheel designs. The cx-9 was introduced as a 2007 model, so these changes represent mid-cycle updates to a proven product.  inside, mazda aimed for a more upscale look for the 2010 cx-9 by adding piano black insets on the steering wheel and radio display and chrome trim to the door handles, door trim, instrument panel and many controls. A double-lid center console design is also new, as is a 4. 3-inch display screen on models without the larger navigation screen.  the mazda cx-9 is a great people hauler. It can carry seven six-foot passengers, thanks to a third-row seat designed with adults in mind. It's easy for a 5-foot, 6-inch woman to climb into the cx-9 because there's no need to climb up into it. Yet the seating position is high enough that the driver looks over at, not up to, drivers in big suvs. We found the cabin surroundings handsome.  the cx-9 is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, providing a nice option for those who worry about snowy travel in hilly areas. Properly equipped, the cx-9 is rated to tow up to 3500 pounds.  what sets the cx-9 apart are its sporty looks and the road manners to back them up. The cx-9 responds quickly to driver input, feeling surprisingly enthusiastic about travel on a serpentine two-lane. Performance is provided by a 3. 7-liter v6 engine delivering 273 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. This refined, 24-valve power plant was designed by ford and is built in ohio before being shipped to japan where the cx-9 is assembled. In fact, the cx-9 is the largest mazda ever. Its overall length of just over 200 inches makes it nearly a foot longer than the toyota highlander or nissan murano. What is perhaps most surprising about the cx-9 is that it doesn't look big from the outside.  the cx-9's new nose features a version of the five-point grille that is now used on most mazdas. There is also an upper grille with a huge mazda insignia. The face now has sharper, more dramatic lines that aren't really better looking. The windshield is sharply raked, leading to a roof that arches, crests and then slides back and down. One surprise is a pronounced bulge in the tailgate, like an old-fashioned bustle. It is a neat trick that adds a little extra storage capacity. Along the sides, the fenders feature prominent flares.  safety researchers say the strength of the vehicle's body is also crucial in providing protection in a side-impact crash. Mazda took this into consideration, providing b-pillars that are extra wide and strong. (the b-pillar is the second roof pillar back from the windshield, which uses the a-pillar.). interiorfor 2010, mazda has made some minor interior changes to give it a more upscale appearance. The cx-9's dashboard and door panels are, after all, mostly plastic with only a few soft-touch surfaces.  all the driving controls stay in the same positions, which is good because they are simple and easy to use. The look is appealing, and nothing about it says boring family transportation.  the cx-9's step-in height makes entry easy for shorter drivers, yet the seating position is as high as in most suvs, which provides a good look down the road. However, average to taller folks will have to duck out of the way of the front pillars when entering because the windshield is so sharply raked. There is plenty of head room, though.  the cx-9 has a surprising amount of room inside. Carrying seven people means two up front, three in the second row and two in the hind quarters. One tester, at 6-feet, 4-inches, could be comfortable in the driver's seat, then move back to the second row and still find enough legroom. That second row, incidentally, is spli.

Swoopy five-seat crossover is enjoyable. introductionthe mazda cx-7 is sporty, svelte, and distinctive, while still being functional, roomy, and comfortable, with decent interior space and all the right safety equipment. The cx-7 excels in cornering, something mazdas are known for.  the cx-7 is in its fifth year, introduced for 2007 when crossovers (suvs with the chassis of a car, not truck) were a new idea. They offer the suv high seating position and cargo capacity, with the more agile steering and smoother ride of a car. Also, fuel mileage is better than with a heavier and boxier truck-based suv. The cx-7 was revised for 2010, with increased body rigidity, stiffened dampers, and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. Inside, it got a new dashboard with electronic equipment upgrades. It's smooth and works well with the 5-speed automatic transmission, well enough that the costlier and more complex 6-speed isn't needed, reserved instead for the sportier turbo.  the turbocharged engine has more midrange power than the base engine, making passing a much easier prospect. Power builds smoothly from a standstill. The 6-speed automatic transmission shifts well and adapts well to different driving situations with impressive torque at low engine speeds.  the base engine is epa rated at 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway. The interior makes no less of a statement than the exterior. Some design features work well, others not so well. Overall, the cx-7 interior seems chunky and a bit complicated, not as friendly and functional as the honda cr-v and the toyota rav4.  in interior space, the mazda falls between cr-v and rav4 in front-seat legroom and rear-seat headroom, but has the least rear-seat legroom by a substantial two inches, with 36. 4 inches. The kia sportage beats the cx-7 too, with 37. 9 inches. In cargo space with the rear seat folded, the cx-7 is a distant third behind the honda and toyota, but it beats the kia.  over rough pavement, the suspension is firm while not being stiff, but sharp bumps can be harsh. And despite good engine compartment and underbody insulation, the tires transmit road noise into the cabin, which otherwise is fairly quiet. Equipment available on higher line models is optional on lower line models.  safety features on all models include dual frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags (to minimize upper body injuries), front and rear side air curtains (to minimize head injuries) with extended inflation (for added protection in the event of a rollover) and a fold-away brake pedal assembly (to reduce threat of injury to the driver's feet in frontal crashes). All cx-7 models come with three-point seatbelts (so be sure to use them), tire-pressure monitor, and rear-seat child safety seat anchors (latch). The bulbous fenders are inspired by the rx-8 sports car. The headlights jut into the tops of the fenders, and mazda uses a small grille above the bumper. This leaves substantial mass below the bumper line that's lightened by a black eggcrate grille flanked by large air intakes, that double as housings for the foglamps on some models.  the side view appeals with wheels pushed to the corners and a super-fast windshield sweeping back over tautly drawn side glass. Side mirrors separate the front door glass from an odd-looking, wind-wing-like, but fixed, tiny piece of glass at the base of the a-pillar. The beltline rises as it moves rearward, kicking up just before the severely blistered rear wheelwell before tucking in between the steeply sloped backlight and the sculpted back end. Full-round, easy-to-grab door handles ride the crest of a soft bulge connecting the tops of the fenders. An understated crease highlights the lower door panels, skipping over the rear tires to continue around the bottom fold of the rear bumper.  the rear aspect is plain, with a modest optional spoiler sitting atop the backlight, itself resting in a gentle dip in the liftgate. A large, seamless bumper stretches the width of the back end, above single (for i models) or dual exhaust tips (for s models). interiorthe interior of the mazda cx-7 makes no less of a statement than the exterior, and with much the same result. Some design features work well, others not so well. The upper part is a ridge stretching across the top of the dash that's supposed to make the front seat passenger feel included in the interior's dynamic. The mid screen is only 4. 1 inches diagonally, though, making the image from the rearview camera and the navigation screen a bit hard to see. There's no turn-by-turn display with the navigation (or if so we never saw it), but it wasn't confusing to program, at least.  functions on the mid are controlled by five buttons on the right side of the steering wheel. The navigation system, too, can be controlled at the steering wheel. It takes some getting used.
