However, its sticker price makes it a pricey investment up front, even after federal and state tax credits. the 2013 volt gets some improvements and additional features. Previously, the volt automatically allocated its electric power depending on driving mode and style. For 2013, a new hold button allows the driver to manually choose whether to use the volt's available electric power immediately, or whether to save it for later use. This can help maximize electric range if the driver saves the electricity for stop-and-go city driving. The 2013 chevrolet volt also gets an epa-estimated increase of three more miles on electric charge, to 38 miles. A new comfort package includes heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The optional safety package 1 includes an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rear park assist and rearview camera. Yet, thanks its 435-pound battery pack, it weighs some 300 pounds more than the larger malibu or fusion. the volt is an exceptionally aerodynamic car, which helps it maximize range and fuel efficiency. Its low hood, raked windshield, long roof and high deck lid create the most aero-efficient chevrolet ever, with a drag coefficient of only 0. 28. That makes it one of the slipperiest sedans in the world. in the design sense, the volt is more forceful looking than other low-drag, high-mileage sedans and hatchbacks currently available. It's clearly cast in the current chevrolet theme, most particularly in front, where it shares traits with the cruze and malibu. Yet the volt makes excellent use of lighting as a design element, and its various aero-enhancing spoilers are integrated into a relatively sleek, holistic shape. It's laid out with two bucket seats in front, two in the rear and a center console running the full length of the cabin. the volt is as different inside as it is on the outside. No other vehicle takes quite the same tack when it comes to interior treatments, yet the volt is not so far out as to be dysfunctional or just plain weird. The center stack of switches is finished in glossy, lacquer-like white. The door pulls, window switches, vents and front cupholders are trimmed in bright silver. The build quality is excellent and the materials and graining are well done. expansive glass brings light into the car. The volt feels quite roomy in front, and we'd venture that only humans beyond perhaps the 80th percentile in stature will feel squeezed in any fashion. The front buckets are handsome and very usable, comprising some of gm's best seats ever. They're very snug and comfortable, but supportive and never numbing. They fit people of average build nicely, though we wonder if those 80th percentile bodies might find them a little small. the volt's gauges are two seven-inch, high-resolution full-color lcds. One is a user configurable cluster in front of the driver, while they other shows audio, climate and navigation functions at the top of the center stack. But eventually the novelty wears off. between these two screens, the driver can find every kind of technical information about the volt's operation. A large speedometer dominates the driver's screen, with other conventional gauges like fuel level arrayed around the corners, a battery depletion gauge on the left, and a floating virtual earth on the right-hand side. The idea is to keep the earth centered at all times for the best battery life and least energy usage. the center stack has several touch buttons that adjust the volt's heating, ventilation, air conditioning, entertainment and navigation functions. These are more like touch areas, without a mechanical button to operate. The driver must use a carefully pointed fingertip to avoid hitting the wrong button or area, but with a bit of time and familiarity, the various operations get easier and the switch collection becomes fun to use. the rear bucke. Retro looks, fun to drive, versatile and efficient. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel wagons that inspired its design. based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr is similar in concept to the chrysler pt cruiser. we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy. the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and side cargo doors with no handles. The cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it's plainer inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage. the hhr ss is the most fun to drive of the hhr models, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. Options for the ls include remote start, the automatic transmission 1,000), running boards, a spoiler, and a variety of other factory and dealer-installed features and accessories. the hhr lt 19,720) adds remote start as standard (but only with the automatic transmission), an eight-way power driver's seat, driver's lumbar support, and the availability of many more optional extras, including a bright chrome appearance package. the hhr 2lt adds the lt equipment group 1,700), which includes the 2. 4-liter engine, 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, fog lamps, running boards, fe3 sport suspension, bluetooth connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, and a pioneer audio system with seven speakers and 260 watts. the hhr ss 26,255) adds the turbocharged engine, performance handling suspension, 18-inch polished alloy wheels, ss embroidered seats, a rear spoiler, and other items. Optional on the ss is the performance package 895). the hhr panel comes in ls 19,030) and lt 20,030) versions. Options and prices for the panel are the same as for the equivalent levels of the non-panel versions. one interesting option for the ls and lt utility versions are solid rear quarter panels 195), which close in the rear sides and give a look somewhat between the utility and the panel models. safety features include front airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with traction control, and tire-pressure monitoring. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling of the chevy hhr, though the whole retro craze is getting long in the tooth. The closest comparison is the chrysler pt cruiser, another retro-styled utility vehicle with good fuel efficiency. the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined, with flat side wheel-well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with nostalgic integrated running boards. The flush glass all around, including the windshield, is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The taillamp treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban. front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide, enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear liftgate. The cargo doors are smooth and don't have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside. the hhr ss sits lower than its stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for a single bright exhaust tip. Rocker moldings somewhat resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above the rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and the rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and liftgate, further differentiate the ss from the others. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides, for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Included are durable, easy-to-clean cargo surfaces, a front passenger seat that folds flat for more cargo space, a 60/40 split/fold-flat second-row seat, and a multi-position cargo package tray in the rear that provides cargo security. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear seat, split 60/40, folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat, and, since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the right, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally, a nice feature. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear liftgate is one piece and raises easily. the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor with tie-down points to help hold things in place. The hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats of the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables. the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. The 2. 4-liter delivers 172 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 167 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm. The torque peak figure at such a high rpm suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak, but quite to the contrary, it's not. Faced with a steep, slow hill, the hhr worked its way upward like a tractor, with no shifting-down or searching by the automatic transmission. There is a warning system that tells the driver to go out for a drive to burn off any condensation that has reached the fuel. although the volt could be characterized as a series hybrid by some definitions, chevrolet insists the volt is an extended-range electric vehicle with onboard generation, and that the gasoline engine, because it adds power through the starter/generator, doesn't ever drive the front tires directly. the battery can drive the volt in any of three modes, normal, sport and mountain, in either drive or low ranges in the planetary transmission, offering a great deal of situational flexibility. Volt engineers recommend using the low range any time the car is driving in bumper-to-bumper or other heavy traffic, so that the brakes can regenerate additional electricity. if the $41,000 price tag seems high, remember the amount of new technology and expensive parts in this car, and be reminded that there is a $7500 federal tax rebate available, which drops the price down to $33,500. There is also a federal rebate of $2000 on a home charging unit. And several states offer refunds or rebates ranging from $2000 to $5000. The result of the low hood, front air dam, long roof, high decklid and cut-off rear panel is the most aero-efficient chevrolet in history, with a drag coefficient of only 0. 28, among the best in the world for sedans. the final design is clearly a chevrolet, with very good use of lighting as a design element, not one but two front spoilers to manage air flow over and around the body, and a bold alloy wheel design mounting goodyear fuel max p215/55r17 low-rolling-resistance tires. interiorthe volt is as modern and different on the inside as it is on the outside. On cloth-seat base models, the door panels and other trim are metallic, but if the premium package is ordered, those panels become wildly graphic, including the dashtop. The very large speedometer numbers dominate the driver's screen, with the normal gauges arrayed around the corners, a battery depletion gauge on the left, and a floating virtual earth on the right-hand side, the idea being to keep the earth centered at all times for best battery life and best energy usage, functionally similar to the growing-leaf display in the ford fusion hybrid. the center stack is very different from everything else out there, a smooth white plastic panel with a dozen and a half touch buttons and touch areas that operate all of the volt's heating, ventilation, air conditioning, entertainment and navigation functions. It's a little bewildering at first, and the driver must use a carefully pointed fingertip to avoid hitting the wrong button or area, but after a short drive, the various functions are easy to find and fun to use. driving impressionlike some of the existing hybrids, the volt is always trying to help the driver achieve better battery performance, better overall efficiency and better fuel mileage, through the various instruments and displays on the instrument panel. Chevrolet said the volt will run from 0 to 60 mph on battery power in less than 9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 100 mph. the chassis underneath the unibody volt is almost all composed of the same parts used on the chevrolet cruze sedan and some german opel models, with the exception of the abs brakes, which are connected to the car's electrical system and recharge the battery every time the car is braked or the accelerator pedal is released. Everything about the steering, braking and handling of the volt reflects the cruze, a highly competent compact. There is nothing weird about it. The steering is relatively quick and nicely weighted, the brakes work extremely well crawling through traffic or even hauling down from highway speeds, and the suspension absorbs big bumps and deep potholes with ease. In this mode, the volt is virtually noiseless, conversation is easy, and the sound system doesn't have to be cranked up to overcome operating noise. A very pleasant commute from the airport to the hotel. the engine did not start until 48 miles had elapsed, and when it did start, it started imperceptibly and stayed quiet under all driving conditions. On a longer highway driving loop, using the battery until it was depleted, and then the engine/generator/motor combination, the onboard gauges told us we had gone 64 miles on battery power, 59 miles with the engine on, for a total of 123 miles, using only 1. 65 gallons of gasoline, or 74. 8 miles per gallon!
