We found it delightful underway, smooth and very responsive. vr6 models use the dynamic vw 3. 6-liter v6, now making 280 horsepower, and the tiptronic. It's a great setup, though with its higher price the value equation isn't as compelling as it is with the 2. 0. we found the highway ride smooth and solid, firm but not harsh. It achieves what it sets out to do: look like a really expensive car. The new sleek roofline seemingly came straight from a hotrod chop shop, lower by a couple of inches (a mere 56 inches tall) and swept back as if the car were racing into a 200-mph wind. The c pillar is wide, but barely visible because it flows back, not down. On the same wheelbase as the passat, the cc has a slightly wider track and is only 1. 2 inches longer, but the shape makes it look bigger. But it's only 62 pounds heavier than a passat. it's unmistakably volkswagen from the front, because of the big vw in the grille, but mistakable from other angles. It's hard to see that the track is only . 4 inches wider in the front (. 6 in the rear), because of the width of the chrome grill with two horizontal bars, and the wraparound headlamps with arrowhead corners front and back. The air intake under the grille gives the cc a strong jaw, with foglamps each side, under long thin amber slivers for turn signals (with amber slits on the mirrors, very cool). The whole nose says upscale. the profile says upscale too, but it sure doesn't say volkswagen. The cc looks more upscale than even the $80,000 phaeton. Just not as big. out of the bold front fender flares, character lines zoom rearward and upward like speed lines, most dramatically the top lines that nearly touch the taillights. The lower line has a chrome strip pasted over it, and it wraps around the rear of the car over the rear bumper. The windshield is steeply raked, the doorsill high and the seat low, although it doesn't have to be that way because height is one of the 12 ways the seat is adjustable. So visibility out the front is not compromised. It's not bad out the rear either, although the headrests don't help; and blind spots from the wide c pillars are reduced by fixed triangular rear door windows behind the passengers' ears. Which are perilously close to the steeply sloping roofline. Rear seat headroom is something that definitely has been compromised by the lower roof. the two seats in the rear are bucket-like, ergonomically designed like the fronts, with wide thigh bolsters, separated by the space taken up by a rolltop cupholding console, as well as a fold-down armrest (behind which is a pass-through hatch to the trunk for skis and such). Not just cupholders in there, but small triangular bins for poker chips or peanuts or whatever. There's a decent but not sumptious 37. 3 inches of rear legroom. each seat is a cozy compartment that makes a passenger feel special, to have his or her own space, like a space ship. Plus, there's an emergency medical kit in that console. It's a driver's compartment made for relaxing, with good vents to control the climate. driving impressionthe 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2. 0-liter engine shoots the car forward impressively, as quick, smooth and satisfying as just about any v6 in any sedan: 0-60 in 7. 4 seconds, and only 0. 1 second slower in the quarter-mile than the vr6. Torque is 207 pound-feet, but, importantly, it comes on at 1700 rpm. With variable valve timing and direct injection, in addition to the turbocharger intercooler, the 2. 0 leads its class in technology. fuel mileage for the 2. 0-liter engine is epa-rated at 21/31 city/highway, which is what we got with more than 50 percent highway driving, including some rapid two-lane transit. Top speed is 130 mph, and we didn't go there, but we'll bet it could run near those speeds without stress, on the autobahn. And although the tiptronic manual mode lends itself to playtime, the rest of the car doesn't really. This is a gentleman's sport sedan comfort coupe thing. Sport is a relative game. It adds a sportier turbocharged gli model for 2012 that reclaims some of that lost content. That engine is somewhat archaic, however. a better value is the 2012 jetta se for $18,495, which brings the five-cylinder 2. 5-liter engine making 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, while getting almost the same fuel economy. the five-cylinder, 20-valve 2. 5-liter engine is a volkswagen stalwart, providing good power for the jetta's needs. It accelerates from zero to 60 in 8. 5 seconds with the 6-speed automatic, and powers the jetta to a top speed of 127 mph, so there's plenty in reserve. We prefer the automatic, because the transmission is so good. the sport mode for the optional 6-speed automatic transmission is sharp and effective. We used it in city driving, where it responded crisply on san francisco's hills, and in slow-and-go freeway traffic, where it kept the transmission in third gear rather than upshifting and downshifting all the time. It can only be shifted through the gearshift; paddle shifters are neither available nor necessary. In manual mode, the transmission is programmed well, responsive and obedient. the 2012 jetta tdi sedan, $22,595, and sportwagen, $25,260, use the latest turbodiesel direct-injected engine, making 140 horsepower with a useful 236 pound-feet of torque, while getting an impressive 30/42 mpg. to get the price down, volkswagen reverted to some less expensive engineering, such as a rear torsion beam suspension and drum brakes in jetta s and se models. The vast majority of drivers will never miss the multi-link suspension and rear discs. Other cost-cutting measures involve interior materials, and these are more evident. The jetta has always been known for high interior quality, and that's no longer the case. On the other hand, the styling is still quite attractive and interior room is improved. the sedan's interior is clean, stylish and comfortable, while being smart, accommodating, and functional. The trim is tasteful, and the standard cloth seats fit well, while the optional v-tex leatherette upholstery passes easily for real leather. Headroom and rear legroom are outstanding, nearly as roomy as a bmw 7 series, and vw makes smart use of cupholders and little storage cubbies. Still, build quality is impressive. The jetta is quiet at speed and feels solid. the new gli model reclaims some of the jetta sedan's lost interior quality. The dashboard is made of a soft-touch material, and vw adds accent stitching to the shifter, seats and steering wheel. the jetta gli features a 200-horsepower 2. 0-liter turbo engine, accelerating from zero to 60 in 6. 8 seconds using the magical dsg twin-clutch automated manual transmission. It also rides a shorter wheelbase, so it has less rear seat room. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on s and se models, and a 6-speed automatic is optional 1,100). The jetta se sedan 18,495) adds v-tex leatherette upholstery, trunk passthrough, heated power mirrors with turn signals, illuminated visor mirrors, floormats, and p205/55hr16 tires. The tdi sedan 22,525) is equipped like the se with convenience package, but it also gets a hill-holder clutch, 4-wheel disc brakes and a trip computer. Volkswagen's goal was to make the passat the most american of any car vw builds. In large part, vw has succeeded, in some ways maybe too well. the first eye-catching feature of the 2012 passat is its price, with the base passat 2. 5l s starting at $19,995, which is lower than any of its prime competitors, even the aggressively priced and marketed hyundai sonata, which opens at $20,145. The new passat, though, delivers some unexpected features in that base model, among the more interesting being automatic dual-zone climate control and bluetooth connectivity. Passat 2. 5l se is available with a gps-based, touch-screen navigation system, although adding in all the other features needed to get to that one brings the price to $26,795. The passat 2. 5l models come with a 170-horspower, 2. 5-liter, inline five cylinder with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. also available in the new passat is a turbocharged diesel, which vw monikers as the tdi and is unique in the market segment. The passat tdi se boasts an epa miles-per-gallon rating of 31/43 mpg city/highway, which is tops for the segment (except for the hybrid-powered hyundai sonata and ford fusion). The passat tdi can be fitted with vw's slick direct-shift gearbox, or dsg, which is a twin-clutch, 6-speed manual transmission that shifts electronically, sans clutch pedal. the top of the line passat 3. 6l comes standard with the dsg and a vw-exclusive, 400-watt fender sound system. Leather, navigation system, sunroof and keyless push button start/stop, along with some other semi-luxury features are available. when we drove the new passats, we found the ride quality comfortable without being soft, well tuned for american interstates. Handling is what most drivers expect from a mainstream, midsize sedan, as in, predictable and forgiving, properly suited for the ins and outs of the daily commute. the new passat's styling is understated, nothing really remarkable, but with enough trademark vw design cues to distinguish it from something imported from japan or from detroit. Its visual proportions obscure somewhat its interior roominess, where it claims best in class rear seat leg room, an accommodation that receives too little consideration in most mainstream sedans. fit and finish has that teutonic feel, with tight tolerances and quality materials. Nothing flashy, just solid, functional controls and easy to read gauges communicating the essential data about the car's mechanicals and electronics. The optional wood grain looks better than the real wood in some higher priced cars. Visibility is good, although there's a bit of blockage out the rear due to the standard three rear seat head restraints. all of these are strong points for this new passat, which volkswagen designed and developed just for the american market. It will not be sold in germany, which continues to get the euro-spec passat. This should appeal to americans' ego, which no doubt is part of vw's grand scheme. In addition to which, as noted, the new passat has a smoother, quieter and more genteel ride. Its styling is less severe. Its interior has softer tones and lower contrasts. This should appeal to the majority of americans, who look at cars as much as means of transportation as expressions of individuality. but this also means that america will no longer get the german version, and some vw fans no doubt will be the lesser for it. Passat 2. 5l s 19,995) includes automatic, dual-zone climate control system and bluetooth connectivity.
