The highlight is a chrome strip that starts at the headlight housing and runs along the car's beltline (where the side windows meet the door panels) all the way to the rearmost tip of the rear quarter glass. Below this is a knife edge crease sweeping up from the front quarter panel through the door handles and finishing as an eyebrow for the taillight housings. Another knife edge crease cuts across the bottom of the doors just above the rocker panels before leapfrogging the rear wheelwells to melt into the rear bumper. This mid-size sedan does just about everything well, and it's supported by toyota's well-earned reputation for quality, reliability and value retention.  one year after a wheels-up redesign, the 2008 toyota camry changes not at all.  the camry benefited from a complete overhaul for 2007, starting with a new, airy interior and continuing with more powerful engines, more transmission choices and increased fuel efficiency. Yet the hallmark of this sixth-generation camry is toyota's effort to shake the stodgy, plain reputation the car had developed in some circles. The camry's aerodynamic styling shows more vitality than we've come to expect from a car many have labeled, and not necessarily in unkind fashion, as japan's buick.  wash-and-wear, no-worries reliability is not a bad thing. Owners depend on the camry, and they're seldom disappointed. It's smooth and quiet, but it can accelerate with vigor. Its cabin is attractive, functional and as refined as anything in its class. The camry is thrilling in no respect, and no particular aspect of its performance is outstanding. Yet it's good in nearly every respect, bad in almost none, and it has a steady, set-and-forget quality that many drivers appreciate. It's pleasant to drive in all circumstances. In se trim, with the manual transmission, it approaches fun.  models range from the surprisingly well-equipped camry ce to the near-luxury camry xle, with nearly all the bells and whistles. Reliability and consumer confidence do not necessarily require blandly conservative styling. A year after the current camry was turned loosed on american roads, the 2008 model's visual impact has diminished only a little.  yet if toyota wanted to make a stronger fashion statement with the country's best selling car, it couldn't risk doing so at the expense of function. This sixth evolution of the camry is the largest ever, though not by much. Its wheelbase is more than two inches longer than models built before 2007, and its track is a hint wider, with wheels pushed further toward the corners of the car. Yet, thanks to a shorter rear overhang, or that portion of the body that extends past the back wheels, this camry maintains the same overall length as the previous generation. The result of this reconfiguration is more interior space, and particularly fore-aft length, with the same external footprint as before.  the flashy new styling (first introduced on the 2007 models) starts at the camry's nose. The front end is fresh, and easily the boldest element of the new look, with sharp points, curving cut-lines and entertaining surface planes. The hood dips broadly through the middle, pushing visual heft out over the front fenders. The grille wears a toyota emblem prominently above softly slanted, horizontal slats. The single-piece fascia blends all the diverse elements into a smooth aerodynamic look that's several steps away from the pro forma, overly inoffensive, just-another-midsize-car-from-japan look.  the side view is less fashionable and somewhat bulky looking, with a high beltline, symmetrical windows and square doors, graced with a barely discernible character line running through flush-mounted door handles. The wheel openings are circular, which on a car with a lower profile might suggest sporty intentions. On the camry, they draw attention to the expanse of sheet metal between them, and instead whisper sedate. An odd but increasingly popular, miniaturized rip on the squared-off trunk lid of the bmw 7 series finishes the side profile.  that bustle-like hump gives the trailing edge of the trunk a slight aero-lip that suggests it's there to reduce rear lift at high speeds. An oversize toyota emblem perches atop the license plate recess. Proud taillight lenses mirror the outline of the headlights, angling down and inward across the trunk lid seam, closely tracing the pattern set by the headlights and grille. The bumper wraps around the back end, capping the corners beneath the taillights and sweeping into a soft, horizontal indentation that, on the v6-equipped models, finishes in cutouts for the chrome-tipped dual exhausts.  the sportier camry se is the easiest model to distinguish, and perhaps the boldest of all. The inference of aero treatment on the trunk lid is boosted on the se with an honest spoiler. A black honeycomb-style grille sneers forward from smoked-tint headlamps, while a full body kit flares the lower edge of the car outward, emphasizing the sport model's lower ride height. Six-spoke, 17-inch aluminum wheels fill those circular wheel wells nicely.  there's also aerodynamic massaging that isn't obvious to the eye, particularly on the sport-tuned se and the other specialty camry, the hybrid. Sports appeal and fuel efficiency. introductionthe mini cooper is fresh from a complete redesign that was launched for the 2007 model year. To meet european environmental and fuel-economy requirements, bmw designed a completely new engine in cooperation with peugeot. It produces approximately the same horsepower as before: 118 in the mini cooper and 172 in the mini cooper s. But now a turbocharger in the cooper s, in place of the old supercharger, delivers 177 pound-feet of torque from 1600 to 5000 rpm, significantly improving the sportier model's performance.  this second-generation version continues to generate smiles on the faces of passersby. That's an impressive feat given the first-generation models have been with us since 2000 and the current version looks very similar.  the mini cooper brings smiles to the faces of its drivers because it's a lot of fun to drive. It's also a practical car, with comfortable seats, useful cargo capacity, and an epa-rated city/highway 28/37 miles per gallon.  inside, it's large enough to accommodate all sizes of drivers and front passengers in comfort. Check too many options and the mini's price can rise quickly from economy-entry to near-luxury levels. It was roomy and comfortable. It was cheap to build, cheap to buy, and cheap to run.  but the mini's fundamental cuteness lent it a sort of chic. Soon it was adopted by celebrities such as peter sellers, who drove one on screen as well as off. Jeep, the mini survived multiple corporate mergers and disasters; and by the time production finally ended in the 1990s, its pioneering transverse engine (mounted sideways, rather than longways, to save space) had been imitated by most automakers. Controversial design, amazing performance. introductionfew mainstream automobiles in the past 20 years have captured the world's attention or stirred controversy to the extent that bmw's ambitious 7 series has. It's also equipped with the latest safety technology. The level of technology borders on overkill. A single, mouse-like interface, bmw's controversial idrive, controls virtually everything in the cabin, from the heater to the radio to the navigation system. To be sure, these systems can require serious commitment to master, but most are genuinely useful. The 7 series has the best-sounding stereo we've experienced in a car. The whisper-quiet cabin is a great place for quiet conversation, ripping electric guitar solos, mozart concertos, or magnificent solitude.  known for brilliant high-performance sedans with conservative styling and straightforward interiors, bmw stepped out of the box with this design. The two years since the 7 series launch have tempered controversy over its stunning styling only a little. This year, the idrive has been simplified, er, improved, er, ummm, changed. The already sophisticated climate control has been improved with precise humidity management, and the side mirrors fold in at the touch of a button to squeeze this big sedan into tight parking spots. Adaptive headlights that turn with the car and a sirius satellite radio receiver are now optional.  this car pushes the limits of driving technology over the horizon. Never mind the density of the owner's manuals (that's plural); owners may get tired of teaching valets how to start the car and put it in gear, to say nothing of the electronic parking brake. Once that's accomplished, however, driving the 7 series cars is easy and quite satisfying. Bmw says its goal with the 7 series was building 'the safest car in the world,: and we don't find much to quibble with there. Comparably equipped, the 7 series even costs less than its primary competitor, the mercedes s-class.  as big luxury sedans go, the bmw 7 series is indeed the ultimate driving machine. lineupthree 7 series models are available for 2004. The 745i 68,500) and long-wheelbase 745li 72,500) are powered by a 4. 4-liter v8 with 325 horsepower, gobs of torque and a six-speed automatic transmission. The 760li 115,800) shares its transmission and most of its engine technology with the 745 models, but gets a 438-horsepower v12 engine. It's also equipped with the latest safety technology. The level of technology borders on overkill. A single, mouse-like interface, bmw's controversial idrive, controls virtually everything in the cabin, from the heater to the radio to the navigation system. To be sure, these systems can require serious commitment to master, but most are genuinely useful. The 7 series has the best-sounding stereo we've experienced in a car. The whisper-quiet cabin is a great place for quiet conversation, ripping electric guitar solos, mozart concertos, or magnificent solitude.  known for brilliant high-performance sedans with conservative styling and straightforward interiors, bmw stepped out of the box with this design. The two years since the 7 series launch have tempered controversy over its stunning styling only a little. This year, the idrive has been simplified, er, improved, er, ummm, changed. The already sophisticated climate control has been improved with precise humidity management, and the side mirrors fold in at the touch of a button to squeeze this big sedan into tight parking spots. Adaptive headlights that turn with the car and a sirius satellite radio receiver are now optional.  this car pushes the limits of driving technology over the horizon. Never mind the density of the owner's manuals (that's plural); owners may get tired of teaching valets how to start the car and put it in gear, to say nothing of the electronic parking brake. Once that's accomplished, however, driving the 7 series cars is easy and quite satisfying. Bmw says its goal with the 7 series was building 'the safest car in the world,: and we don't find much to quibble with there. Comparably equipped, the 7 series even costs less than its primary competitor, the mercedes s-class.  as big luxury sedans go, the bmw 7 series is indeed the ultimate driving machine. lineupthree 7 series models are available for 2004. Lancer was last redesigned for the 2008 model year.  the 2012 lancer se is a new model. It uses mitsubishi's all-wheel drive system called awc (all-wheel control), with the proven 2. 4-liter engine making 168 horsepower. Ready for the snow belt, the lancer se comes with heated seats and mirrors.  the base lancer de is not bare bones, with its power doors and windows, keyless entry and auto halogen headlamps, but it lacks air conditioning, folding rear seat, and cruise control. For 2012, lancer es gets new interior fabric and instrument panel trim. The lancer es sportback is a smooth-looking 5-door. It uses mitsubishi's excellent 2. 4-liter engine, a gem of a powerplant, coupled with a sweet 5-speed gearbox or 6-step cvt (continuously variable transmission) with paddle shifters that's rated 23/30 mpg. We got good seat time in a lancer sportback gt 5-speed with front air dam and rear spoiler, looking sleek in graphite gray pearl and 10-spoke alloy wheels. Lancer gt is compelling for its good looks, enjoyable driving characteristics and fuel economy. The 2012 lancer ralliart is available only as a sedan, with flared fenders, hood scoop, vents like shark gills, optional recaro seats. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution is also standard, along with active stability control. Front seatbelts have pretensioners and force limiters to help position users for maximum protection from airbags in crashes. Rear seats incorporate child safety seat anchors and tethers (latch). Available all-wheel control enhances safety in slippery conditions. The body-colored front bumper perfectly splits it up and minimizes its extreme. Angular headlamps top off the look with exoticism.  the gt used to be cleaner than the ralliart, which outlines the grille with a chrome ring, like silver lipstick on a fish. But in 2012 the gt gets the ralliart grille. Although not the ralliart's cool aluminum hood with an inset scoop for the turbocharger intercooler, and two functional vents that do resemble shark gills. The ralliart also has flared fenders that house low profile tires. Its 18-inch alloy wheels are a new design for 2012, and, to us at least, aren't as pretty as the previous 10-spoke wagon-wheel wheels.  the angular taillamps have that same exotic-eyes look as the headlights, wrapping around the edges of the car. The rear deck is quite short, and clean on the es and se sedans; while the gt and ralliart have a spoiler wing that's so big it nearly fills up the trunk lid. It's not unattractive, but it is overkill. The gt has one chrome tailpipe, the ralliart two.  the sportback body style has a properly discreet spoiler over the liftgate. Among the lancer's 5-door rivals, namely mazda3, subaru impreza, and vw golf, the sportback has the best and least boxy lines. Its silhouette is sharp and tidy, and the overall lines are sweet, maybe less edgy. It looks good in graphite gray pearl, and octane blue pearl catches the eye.  as for the evo, the nose borders on brutish, with a deep spoiler that does double duty, shoving the onrushing air out of the way to keep the front tires firmly planted while forcing cooling air past a sporty black mesh into the intercooler and radiator. Shark headlamps curl around the fenders in a stylistic optical illusion masking the longish front overhang. Ducts in the hood serve dual purposes (like the chin spoiler), vacuuming hot air out of the engine compartment to cool the engine and reducing lift. interiorthere's nothing not to like about the interior of the mitsubishi lancer, starting with the upholstery and trim that are new for 2012. The overall feel for the driver in each model is just right. Same can be said on a smaller scale about the more pedestrian seats in the lancer se.

A solid midsize sedan as good as toyota and honda. introductionthe chevrolet malibu midsize sedan blends a smooth ride with responsive handling, a quiet interior, effective crash performance and noteworthy build quality. A new fuel-saving 6-speed automatic transmission with tapshift manual control is standard on all 2011 malibu models. Onstar 9. 0, the latest version with improved voice recognition, comes standard with six months of directions and connections service with turn-by-turn navigation. The seats are very comfortable, with plenty of front-seat room. The back seats offer generous legroom. Trunk space is tight, however.  we found the malibu pleasant to drive. It's smooth and comfortable, striking a nice balance between well-controlled handling and an even ride. It has with plenty of power when equipped with the v6.  choosing among the best midsize sedans largely comes down to nitpicking, splitting hairs and personal preferences. The camry and accord may have an edge on resale value, but they're also likely to come with higher price tags. In any case, we don't see the gap between this chevrolet and the imports that we used to see. Malibu, camry and accord, and the ford fusion are all superb midsize sedans. A 3. 6-liter v6 is optional and it comes with hydraulic power steering.  malibu ls 21,975) comes with air conditioning, cloth upholstery, power height-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar adjustment, cruise control, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, power windows, power mirrors, power locks, remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with xm satellite radio and auxiliary input jack, outside temperature display, automatic headlights, six months of onstar 9. 0 directions and connections service with turn-by-turn navigation, and p225/50r17 tires on steel wheels.  malibu lt 22,825) adds steering-wheel audio controls, ambient lighting, body-color mirrors, more bright trim, carpeted floor mats, new- for-2011 bright aluminum wheels, and a longer option list. A long wheelbase provides ample interior room for occupants and a smooth, quiet ride.  the body design is bold, long and sleek, with an especially appealing roofline that looks like it belongs on a luxury car. The bodysides are completely clean and uncluttered, and the twin round taillamps pay homage to the corvette. The dual-port grille is a contemporary chevrolet design cue, which gives the malibu a distinctive look, and distinction is an important goal of the midsize sedan designer. Everything is within arm's reach and easy to operate. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night.  less noticeable are thoughtful features such as ambient lighting. A feature associated with expensive luxury cars, and recently popularized by mercedes and bmw, ambient lighting helps the driver and front passenger find secondary controls and items around the center console. A cubby on top of the dash is convenient for smaller items and is a very useful feature.  cloth, faux-suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are monotone, but several two-tone interior combinations are available, including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive.  we found the leather seats in the malibu ltz quite comfortable. Piping in a contrasting tone dresses them up. The front bucket seats are somewhere between sumptuous and luscious in the way they look and the way they sit, and are very comfortable and supportive.  the long wheelbase affords each occupant plenty of room, and there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear compartment for six-foot-plus passengers. The backs of the front seats are dished out to add knee room. The rear seatbacks flip down to provide a pass-through to the trunk.  while the trunk has 15. 1 cubic feet of cargo volume, the stylish rear pillars are pushed to the far back of the car, creating a small trunk opening that won't accept large boxes.  cubby storage includes a dashtop storage bin, door cubbies, and seatback pockets. We've never cared for roll-up sliding covers on center consoles due to their ability to attract crumbs, dust and debris. Ambient lighting for the overhead console and door-pull pockets adds convenience.  overall, the malibu interior is attractive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is good. We think the malibu's interior compares well to the cabin of the honda accord. In fact, it may be more attractive, though the material on the steering wheel hub and the hard plastic on the lower dash aren't as nice. However, the malibu has an attractive leather shift boot when the leather upholstery is chosen, and the accord does not.  every malibu comes with satellite radio and the latest version of onstar with turn-by-turn navigation. However, there's no gps navigation system, nor is there a back-up camera. Chevrolet says many people prefer to use their portable gps units and relatively few want to pay for an oem navigation system. We've heard that view from respectable drivers, but we prefer in-dash units. In fact, we found it easier and less confusing to make adjustments in the malibu than in a comparably equipped (without navigation) honda accord. The honda seemed less intuitive and convenient, the chevrolet seemed more intuitive and convenient. Unlike the accord, the malibu has the audio controls at the top, which is better because people tend to fiddle with sound systems more than temperature controls.  remote starting is available. This lets the driver start the car by pressing a button on the key fob from the comfort of the house on wintry mornings, allowing the car to warm up while the driver sits inside sipping coffee. That same feature can be used with air conditioning on sweltering summer afternoons. driving impressionthe suspension soaked up rough mississippi farm roads with grace and competence, and kept the car straight and flat without a lot of pitching and body roll. On pockmarked chicago streets, though, we did experience some jolts in the rear suspension, but they were pretty rough streets.  the steering is reasonably quick and precise, but without much real road feel. The thoroughly modern v6 has 252 horsepower and delivers performance that is good, if not sparkling. Most families will find no shortage of power or performance.

The camry's aerodynamic styling shows more vitality than we've come to expect from a car many have labeled, and not necessarily in unkind fashion, as japan's buick.  wash-and-wear, no-worries reliability is not a bad thing. Owners depend on the camry, and they're seldom disappointed. It's smooth and quiet, but it can accelerate with vigor. Its cabin is attractive, functional and as refined as anything in its class. The camry is thrilling in no respect, and no particular aspect of its performance is outstanding. Yet it's good in nearly every respect, bad in almost none, and it has a steady, set-and-forget quality that many drivers appreciate. It's pleasant to drive in all circumstances. This sixth evolution of the camry is the largest ever, though not by much. Its wheelbase is more than two inches longer than models built before 2007, and its track is a hint wider, with wheels pushed further toward the corners of the car. Yet, thanks to a shorter rear overhang, or that portion of the body that extends past the back wheels, this camry maintains the same overall length as the previous generation. The result of this reconfiguration is more interior space, and particularly fore-aft length, with the same external footprint as before.  the flashy new styling (first introduced on the 2007 models) starts at the camry's nose. The front end is fresh, and easily the boldest element of the new look, with sharp points, curving cut-lines and entertaining surface planes. The hood dips broadly through the middle, pushing visual heft out over the front fenders. The grille wears a toyota emblem prominently above softly slanted, horizontal slats. The single-piece fascia blends all the diverse elements into a smooth aerodynamic look that's several steps away from the pro forma, overly inoffensive, just-another-midsize-car-from-japan look.  the side view is less fashionable and somewhat bulky looking, with a high beltline, symmetrical windows and square doors, graced with a barely discernible character line running through flush-mounted door handles. The wheel openings are circular, which on a car with a lower profile might suggest sporty intentions. On the camry, they draw attention to the expanse of sheet metal between them, and instead whisper sedate. An odd but increasingly popular, miniaturized rip on the squared-off trunk lid of the bmw 7 series finishes the side profile.  that bustle-like hump gives the trailing edge of the trunk a slight aero-lip that suggests it's there to reduce rear lift at high speeds. An oversize toyota emblem perches atop the license plate recess. Proud taillight lenses mirror the outline of the headlights, angling down and inward across the trunk lid seam, closely tracing the pattern set by the headlights and grille. The bumper wraps around the back end, capping the corners beneath the taillights and sweeping into a soft, horizontal indentation that, on the v6-equipped models, finishes in cutouts for the chrome-tipped dual exhausts.  the sportier camry se is the easiest model to distinguish, and perhaps the boldest of all. The inference of aero treatment on the trunk lid is boosted on the se with an honest spoiler. A black honeycomb-style grille sneers forward from smoked-tint headlamps, while a full body kit flares the lower edge of the car outward, emphasizing the sport model's lower ride height. Six-spoke, 17-inch aluminum wheels fill those circular wheel wells nicely.  there's also aerodynamic massaging that isn't obvious to the eye, particularly on the sport-tuned se and the other specialty camry, the hybrid. Engineers focused on making the underbody as flat as possible to smooth airflow under the car and reduce noise. On the se, they also tuned the flow to balance downforce, or the aerodynamic force that presses the car to the pavement, nearly equally over the front and rear tires.  with the camry hybrid, the aerodynamic focus was on efficiency. Wider door openings, heated rear seats, a folding armrest with storage bins, rear audio and climate controls, mood lighting and a cigar-sized ashtray make this a luxurious ride for those with chauffeurs. An executive series version will also be produced as a limousine for the livery market. walkaroundthe town car upholds the time-honored american luxury car formula of rear-wheel drive, a v8 engine, smooth ride, seating for six, a huge trunk, and lots of luxury amenities. The current design sports complex reflector headlamps and a pursed-lips grille, as well a chrome license plate surround and big corner-mounted tail lamps. Its powertrain is smooth and refined, and the styling is more sensual and modern than any previous town car. Some of the most cutting-edge technological advancements from its rivals are missing.
